Why visit India?
It’s impossible to condense India into a single trip. However, while erring away from honeypot tourist destinations and focusing on wilder regions, these tours combine elements of the sub-continent that emphasise the true diversity of experience on offer. From the country’s capital, to some of its best national parks, searching out Royal Bengal tigers, endangered Asiatic wild ass, and colourful birdlife, there’s a lot to see.
Elsewhere, follow the Jain pilgrimage trail to the world’s largest temple complex and indulge in the fantasy of the royalty while staying at a maharajah’s palace.
Undiscovered Destinations tours don’t claim to be able to offer you the whole country at once. Anyone with any experience of travelling in this vast and contrary region would tell you that that is impossible. By concentrating on specific regions and offering a more off the beaten track itinerary, our tours and holidays aim to give you a glimpse of what is possible.
If there is just one place to visit on your first trip, then we would suggest Bandhavgarh National Park. As is often the case, the origin of the national park has a darker past; it was a popular tiger hunting area for the local maharajas of Rewa, and this continued well into the 20th century.
However, as the largely forested areas in the north, perfect for the big cats’, were progressively felled and shooting of tigers for trophies continued, it became apparent that the Bengal tiger’s very existence was in doubt.
This story has a relatively happy ending though as the maharajah donated the parkland to the state as a nature reserve and since then a healthy population of big cats has been nurtured.
Once you have travelled to India you will soon discover that you want to return. Any one of Undiscovered Destinations small group tours or tailor-made holidays more than delivers an incredible Indian experience.
