Day 1 – Arrival Bissau
Arrive into Bissau and transfer to your hotel. Overnight Hotel Azalai or similar.
Day 2 - Manjaco Tribe
We will spend the day exploring the region inhabited by the Manjaco ethnic group with visits to tiny villages in the forest. These villages are notable for sculptured wooden poles called ‘Pecab’ representing the spirits of the ancestors. With the permission of the elders we have the opportunity to admire these sacred wooden sculptures varying in age and style. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy tribal art in its original cultural context. Overnight Hotel Banagam or similar. (BLD)
Day 3 – Villages of the Flooded Forest – Felupes and Baiotes tribe
Today we travel along the Cacheu River to observe the abundant bird life including huge Pelicans, Goliath Herons, egrets, storks and flamingos. Leaving the main river, we navigate flooded mangrove forest towards the distinctive adobe huts of isolated villages inhabited by the Felupes and Baiotes, tribes of the Diula ethnic group. We’ll learn about complex tribal technology involved in desalination of land for cultivation, and perhaps witness other traditional practices. Overnight Aparthotel Avo Anisa or similar (BLD)
Day 4 – Reminiscences of Colonial Times
We drive to Quinhamel to visit a traditional healer specialised in the treatment of bone injuries, and then visit a local rum distillery which has been in use since colonial times, and visit a cashew nut plantation, the main export of the country. Overnight Cupedo Hotel or similar (BLD)
PLEASE NOTE – DAYS 4, 5 and 6 – The itinerary will be modified to accommodate either the ‘Vaca Bruto’ Wild Bull Dancing Mask Festival, Tribal Carnival or to search for the Salt Water Hippo and/or to possibly witness nesting turtles, depending on your departure date.

Day 5 - Pepel Tribe – Bissau
This morning is spent discovering the culture of the Pepel people, who still follow animist traditions. This afternoon we arrive back into Bissau. Take a stroll around Bissau-Vehlo; the lively old quarter with its sleepy streets and alleys. Overnight Hotel Azalai or similar (BLD)
Day 6 – Ghost Capital
This morning we head for the Bijagos Archipelago. Our first stop will be Bolama Island, the former Portuguese capital of Guinea-Bissau but now an atmospheric ‘ghost town’, with charming remnants of its former importance. We then head to Rubane Island which will be our base for our stay in the Bijagos Archipelago. Overnight Hotel Ponta Anchaca or similar (BLD)
Day 7 – Dancing Masks
This morning we take a boat excursion to Anguruma via the Bay of Soga with its colony of pink flamingos before continuing to Bubaque. We visit the village, the largest in the archipelago, and only one connected to the continent by a ferry once a week. This afternoon we attend the Vaca Bruto Dancing Masks before returning to our hotel on Rubane Island. Overnight Hotel Ponta Anchaca or similar (BLD)
Day 8 – Beach Relaxation
Today is at leisure to relax on the beach or discover the lush vegetation and villages on the island. Overnight Hotel Ponta Anchaca or similar (BLD)
An excursion to Orango Island to see saltwater hippos (sightings not guaranteed) and the village of Okina Pamapa can be arranged on request.
Day 9 – Bissau
After a relaxing morning we continue to Bissau for an overnight stay. Overnight Hotel Azalai or similar (BL)
Day 10 – Bissau
Transfer to the airport for your departure flight. (B)
