Holidays and Tours

As well as being the world’s most populous country, China is also one of the largest. Stretching 5,000 kilometres from east to west and 5,500 kilometres from north to south, China’s immense size contains many diverse environments.

Known as the Middle Kingdom, the Red Dragon, or the Sleeping Giant, China is one of the four ‘ancient civilisations’ along with the Babylonian, Mayan and Egyptian. There has been official documentation of China’s history for more than 3000 years.

Before 19th century, China was amongst the most advanced societies in the world and had one of the biggest and successful economies in the world. It then missed the industrial revolution and began to decline with the 19th and 20th centuries bringing  imperialism, internal weakness and civil wars.  After stagnating communist rule under its late leader, Chairman Mao, China now has the world’s fastest-growing economy and is undergoing what has been described as a second industrial revolution.

If you are looking for a complete cultural change from life in the West, travelling to China is possibly the place for you. It is unlike almost anywhere else on the planet. Of course, the trappings of a modern society are everywhere to see. The mobile phone is ubiquitous and modern office blocks and skyscrapers now tower above the ancient street of many of the large cities.

Dig a little deeper and look past the superficial trappings of modern living, then you will find a country with its own unique food and drink, distinct languages and literature, a mix of different cultures, and a fascinating history.

The ‘new’ China is a powerhouse economically and politically. This is a country eager to make the rest of the world sit up and take notice. It is hard to ignore the political and economic impact of this vast country; however for the adventurous tourist there is a great deal to be discovered.

There are the obvious great sites of China, such as The Great Wall, Shanghai, the Forbidden City and the Terracotta warriors of Xi’an. These are all rightly at the top of any tourists list of must-sees. But there is so much more when you get off the tourist trail. Come with Undiscovered Destinations as we explore China and try to discover the real Middle Kingdom.
