Papua New Guinea - Discovery tour Day 1 (Wednesday) Depart UK Depart London Heathrow 2205 arrive Singapore 1755+1 SQ321 Day 2 (Thursday) Depart Singapore Depart Singapore 2110 arrive Port Moresby 0540+1 PX393 Day 3 (Friday) Arrive Papua New Guinea Depart Port Moresby 1115 arrive Wewak 1305 PX940 After arrival in Wewak, transfer to the In Wewak for check in. Overnight at the In Wewak Situated on Wewak Hill overlooking the Bismark Sea the Hotel is nestled in amongst residential housing offering a quiet and peaceful break away. The Hotel comes with many features including air-conditioned rooms with flat screen tv, Internet facilities, resort style pool, Cocoa Cafe & Vanilla Room Restaurants for meals. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the many furnished decks while you take the time to relax and enjoy. Day 4 (Saturday) Travel the Sepik River This morning we depart Wewak by road and transfer to Pagwi for a canoe trip along the Sepik River. We travel from Pagwi to Ambunti in our motorised canoe. On arrival in Ambunti we check in at the Ambunti Lodge. After our lunch, we have a further half day canoe trip to Wagu Lake, a WWF Nature Conservation area. . Overnight at the Ambunti Lodge The Lodge provides basic accommodation and a licensed restaurant. It consists of 7 twin or double bedrooms and two common bathrooms. Day 5 (Sunday) The villages of the Upper Sepik River Today we visit Upper Sepik area including the villages of Maliwe, Yesan and the Swagap. The Swagap is the home of the Insect Tribe people. Their unique art usually incorporates the figure of a dragonfly, sago beetle, praying mantis or other insects. The ferocious reputation these people earned in former times continues to this day. We then return to Ambunti Lodge. Overnight at the Ambunti Lodge Day 6 (Monday) The villages of the Middle Sepik River The tour continues today when we visit the Middle Sepik area and the villages of Korogu, Palimbe and Aibom. Korogu has a very impressive haus tambara, while Palimbe is a beautiful village built around several small lagoons full of water lilies. On arrival in Pagwi we transfer to Wewak by Road and check in at In Wewak. Overnight at the In Wewak Day 7 (Tuesday) Port Moresby and Mt. Hagen An early morning flight from Wewak takes us to Port Moresby. After arrival in Port Moresby, we take a city tour including the National Parliament and the National Museum. We then head back to the airport for our flight to Mount Hagen. After arrival in Mt Hagen, transfer to Kumul Lodge and check in. Overnight at the Kumul Lodge There are not too many places where the Bird of Paradise can be viewed from a bedroom window. The Kumul Lodge is just such a place and is truly a birdwatchers paradise. The lodge is a locally owned and staffed venture. Besides being an eco-tourist destination, the lodge also serves as a rural development initiative which works in co-operation with the local village societies. Day 8 (Wednesday) Mt. Hagen This morning we have a guided walking tour around Kumul Lodge. You will get to see the breathtaking views of the Hagen mountain (3,727 metres / 11,181 feet) in front of you. There are over 220 species of birds which can be seen in the grounds of the lodge and nearby areas. This comprises 75% of all Bird of Paradise species in Papua New Guinea. After Lunch, we will visit a nearby village for a cultural show. You will meet and chat with the friendly people and visit their village communities. Overnight at the Kumul Lodge Day 9 (Thursday) The Asaro Mudmen Depart Mt Hagen by road to Goroka via the Scenic Highlands Highway. We visit Asaro Mudman in their Village and enjoy a Mudman performance. Asaro is famous for its mudmen, warriors who traditionally covered themselves in grey mud and wore huge mud masks before heading off on raids. Overnight at the Bird of Paradise Hotel, Goroka The Bird of Paradise Hotel is conveniently located right in the centre of town, overlooking the surrounding mountain ranges. The outdoor heated swimming pool is set in semi-tropical gardens. The A la carte Lahani Restaurant, popular for its seafood buffet, and the Deck Bistro are the town's most popular meeting places. Day 10 (Friday) - Goroka Today we take a trek around the Goroka area and enjoy breathtaking scenery and explore the mysterious lime stone caves. This is a moderate trek and suitable for most people, no specific training is required. Overnight at the Bird of Paradise Hotel, Goroka Day 11 (Saturday) The Highlands Highway A morning departure from Goroka by road takes us to Madang via the Highlands Highway. On our way, we stop off at the Kainantu Pottery Centre and Yonki dam. The dam provides power for Lae, Madang and the Highlands. We arrive into Madang in the afternoon. Overnight in Jais Aben Hotel, Madang Located on a peninsula beside the warm clear waters of the Bismarck Sea, Jais Aben was once a 22 acre coconut plantation. Today it is also home to a privately funded research facility, the Christiensen Research Institute which is dedicated to terrestrial and marine biological research. The accommodation at Jais Aben comprises eighteen ocean front units each overlooking small coral beaches. Each unit has ample accommodation for up to four people and all are equipped with refrigerators, and tea/coffee making facilities. Day 12 (Sunday) - Madang In the morning we take a tour of Madang. Colourful Madang has been called the "prettiest town in the South Pacific". Its peninsula setting is a show-place of parks, waterways, luxuriant shade trees and sparkling tropical islands. Although small, the town has modern urban facilities, including hotels, department stores, markets and artefacts shops. After your tour the rest of the day is free to explore the area or relax on the beach and snorkel. Overnight in Jais Aben Hotel, Madang Day 13 (Monday) Madang Today we visit a nearby village for a performance by the local people. In the afternoon your time is free to enjoy the area. Overnight in Jais Aben Hotel, Madang Day 14 (Tuesday) - East New Britain Early this morning, we depart Madang to fly to Rabaul, in East New Britain Province. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Kokopo. Kokopo is a friendly beach town with a laid back feel. After lunch, there is a half day tour of Kokopo including Kokopo Museum, Queen Emma step, Vunapope Church and the Coconut & Cacao plantation. Overnight in Kokopo Village Resort, Kokopo The resort is set in lush tropical gardens and beautifully sits above a magnificent beachfront over looking the Duke Of York Islands. All rooms are fitted with air conditioning, direct dial telephones, mini bar fridges and multi channel television. There is also a complimentary tea and coffee making facility. Day 15 (Wednesday) - The Gazelle Peninsula Today we have a full day tour of the Gazelle Peninsula including the Japanese Burge Tunnel, Volcanological Observatory, Malmalan Lookout, the Submarine Base and a visit to a colourful local market. Overnight in Kokopo Village Resort, Kokopo Day 16 (Thursday) - Kavieng Mid morning today, we leave Rabaul on a flight to Kavieng. On arrival in Kavieng, we check in at our hotel and have a town tour. Kavieng is the quintessential South Pacific town; an outpost in a tropical paradise and the perfect place to dive, relax on a beach or discover an amazing tropical world. The scenery is stunning and contrasting - low lying coral islands surrounded by golden beaches and pretty fringing reefs and mountainous islands which drop sharply into the sea. Overnight in Malagan Beach Resort, Kavieng Built on the white sandy shore of its own private beach, with a flowing creek and shady retreats at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Malagan Beach resort is just a barefoot stroll from paradise! 16 rooms offer ensuite, TV, tea/coffee facilities, a fridge, are air conditioned and have balconies. Day 17 (Friday) The Bulminski Highway Today we take a full day tour along the Bulminski Highway. The coast consists of one breathtaking beach after another with limestone pinnacles jutting out of the ocean and lagoons of surpassing beauty. Stops along the way include an Eel Farm and a Malagan artefact factory. This evening after dinner, we take a Fire Fly Tour to view natures spectacular show. Overnight in Malagan Beach Resort, Kavieng Day 18 (Saturday) - West New Britain At midday we leave Kavieng to fly to Hoskins, in the West New Britain Province. After arrival in Hoskins, we transfer to Walindi Plantation Resort and check in. Overnight at the Walindi Plantation Resort Walindi's accommodation consists of 12 self contained, comfortable bure style bungalows spread along the beach front, and surrounded by rainforest gardens. The bungalows are constructed of local materials and timbers, with thatched roofs. They are all fully screened, with private bathroom, a kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities, and ceiling fans. Day 19 (Sunday) Talasea The Talasea area is an active volcanic region. Lake Dakataua at the tip of the Willaumez Peninsula was formed in a colossal eruption in 1884. This morning we take a tour to the Garu hot river, heated by the volcanic activity where you can swim. The afternoon is free to relax. Overnight at the Walindi Plantation Resort Day 20 (Monday) Return to Port Moresby and departure An early morning departure from Walindi Resort for Hoskins Airport and a flight to Port Moresby. Lunch is taken in Port Moresby before you return to the airport for your departure flight.
