Myanmar - Dance of the Elephant and Pagoda Festivals Tour Rating: Hidden Luxury With strictly limited places available, we recommend early booking for our special October festival tour to Myanmar. Still with plenty of opportunity to explore many of the sights covered on our regular tours, this trip is for those who want to be part of some of the most spectacular festivities in South East Asia. Day 1 – UK to Yangon This evening you depart on the overnight flight to Yangon. There is just one change of aircraft enroute. Day 2 – Arrive Yangon You will be met and welcomed at the airport upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. Sightseeing highlights today include the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda; Chaukhtatkyi pagoda, which is a colossal reclining Buddha; and the National Museum, filled with artefacts and cultural exhibits of Myanmar. In the evening enjoy a special dinner with a cultural show. Overnight Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, Yangon (BD) Day 3 - Yangon to Kyaikhtiyo After breakfast you will be begin the drive to Kyaiktiyo (about 5 hours). this is the site of the fanous 'Golden Rock', a large boulder delicately balanced, supposedly by the assistance of a hair of the Buddha. It is one of the most revered Buddhist Shrines. Overnight Moutain Top Resort, Kyaiktiyo (BD) Day 4 - Kyaikhtiyo, Bago and Yangon We will have breakfast at the hotel and view the memorable sunrise, before descending the mountain to return to Yangon. On route we stop off at Bago to visit some interesting pagodas. Overnight Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, Yangon (BD) Day 5 - Bagan This morning we transfer to the airport for the flight to Bagan. After checking in to our hotel, we head off sight-seeing one of Asia's most popular archeological destinations. Highlights include Nyaung Oo Market and many of Bagan's distinctive pagodas. A rest at the hotel before an afternoon visit to a local lacquerware factory, followed by a wonderful sunset over Bagan. Overnight Thiripyitsaya Sakura Hotel (BD) Day 6 - Bagan The sightseeing highlights today include visits to more of Bagan’s impressive pagodas such as Nagayon, an elegant and well preserved temple containing many Buddhas. Nanpaya, Gubaukgyi, in the old Bagan village of Myinkaba, is an early period temple with well preserved paintings inside; and Mingalazedi, the very last of the Late period monuments built before the kingdom’s decline. Overnight Thiripyitsaya Sakura Hotel (BD) Day 7 - Mount Popa After your breakfast we drive to Salay to visit the large number of attractive monasteries. The Salay area is also noted for the plums that are grown in the region. We continue on to Mount Popa, which rose from the ground in a massive earthquake in 442BC. It is the famous abode of the Nats (Spirit Gods) and has a stunning view of the surrounding plains. The day is completed with a visit to a local family who make toddy palm juice for sale from the toddy palms. Overnight Popa Moutain Resort (BD) Day 8 - Mandalay Today we drive to Mandalay (about 6 hours - 183 miles). A friendly wave to curious onlookers along the road will bring warm smiles and waves of appreciation in return. We arrive in Mandalay and check-in to our hotel for the evening. Overnight Sedona Hotel, Mandalay (BD) Day 9 - Amarapura We travel to the former Royal capital of Amarapura. One of the days highlights is Mahagandayon monastery which is a school for young monks. We also visit the U Bein bridge, being more than two centuries old and 1.2 km, it is the longest teakwood span in the world. Our next stop is Inwa, founded in 1364 and which lasted 400 years as a Royal capital. We see the 'leaning tower of Ava', Maha Aungmye Bonzan and the elegant teakwood monastery Bagaya Kyaung. Our journey continues to Monywa on the Chindwin River. Overnight Monywa Hotel (BD) Day 10 – Monywa to Mandalay Sightseeing today includes an excursion across the Chindwin River to visit the fascinating Po Win Daung Caves, Shwe Ba Daung and the village of Kyaukka. Later we return to Mandalay. Overnight Sedona Hotel, Mandalay (BD) Day 11 – Pyin Oo Lwin Your day begins with a short drive to Maymyo, a former British Hill Station. The town is named after the British Colonel May who established the beautiful botanical gardens. Now officially renamed Pyin Oo Lwin, sights include the Purcell Tower - a gift from Queen Victoria, the vegatable market and of course the many charming horse drawn carriages which are used as local taxis. Overnight Sedona Hotel, Mandalay (BD) Day 12 – Kyauktawgyi Pagoda Festival This morning we take a short and pleasant ride upriver to Mingun, the site of what would have been the world's largest zedi had not King Bodawpaya died in 1819, thus halting further work. Nevertheless, it is still an extremely impressive sight. We also visit the nearby Mingun Bell, the largest hanging, uncracked bell in the world. The highlight of today is in the evening when we enjoy the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda festival. You will see the local people taking part and have a chance to participate, with many craft and food vendors, music and dance. Overnight Sedona Hotel, Mandalay (BD) Day 13 - Kyak Se Elephant Dance festival An early morning drive to Kyak Se to enjoy the famous Kyak Se Elephant Dance festival. At the festival numerous life-size dummy elephants with men inside sing and dance to the accompaniment of music. The tradition came from the legend that Kyak Se was once an area where the Kings used to come and hunt for elephants. That is why today colourful dummy figures are used for the extravagant celebrations. Later in the day we transfer to the airport for a flight to Heho. Overnight Myanmar Treasure Resort (BD) Day 14 - Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival Today is the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival and we visit on the best day of festival activities with local people welcoming visitors with a warm and friendly smile. In the afternoon we visit the magical Inle Lake, to see the fishermen rowing in the one-legged style that is famous on the Lake. Overnight Myanmar Treasure Resort (BD) Day 15 - Inle and Indein A visit to a local market and Indein, with its enchanting 16th century pagodas. To reach Indain and the nearby village we will take a boat ride up a small scenic creek that runs into Inle Lake. We get to see the Pindaya Caves with nearly 8000 Buddha images placed there over the centuries. Overnight Inle Inn Resort (BD) Day 16 - Return to Yangon After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to the airport for the flight to Yangon. On arrival we go to the famous Scott Market, a sprawling 81 year old complex noted for its variety of handicrafts. We also take in the Botataung Pagoda, which is hollow and through which you can walk in and see many ancient relics and artifacts. Overnight Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, Yangon (BD) Day 17 - Transfer to the airport for return flight A day at leisure until it is time to transfer to the airport for you return flight to the UK Day 18 - Arrival in UK Your tour ends today when you arrive in the UK Top of page>> |
