Itinerary

Day 1 - Sandakan
Arrive in Sandakan and transfer to your hotel. Depending on your flight arrival times, there may be an opportunity to explore the town. Overnight Swiss Inn or similar. (D)

Day 2 - Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary and Kinabatangan River
This morning we visit Sepilok for the 10am feeding of the orang-utans and then continue to the Kinabatangan River. The Kinabatangan River is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 kilometres. The river, within a wildlife reserve is known for its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitats. At 4pm, we take a sunset river cruise where it is possible to see Proboscis monkeys and perhaps wild orang-utan, crocodiles, elephants and many other types of primates. Overnight Kinabatangan Nature Lodge or similar. (BLD)

Day 3 - Kinabatangan River
Today you will spend the whole day at the Kinabatangan River with a sunrise and sunset river safari. The afternoon can be spent jungle trekking, planting trees as part of a WWF project or relaxing by the river watching the birds. Overnight Kinabatangan Nature Lodge or similar. (BLD)

Day 4 - Gomantong Caves - Sabah Tea Plantation
En route to the Sabah Tea Plantation you will stop at the Gomantong caves, famous for the collection of birds' nests for soup. Continue to the tea plantation and take a tour of the factory. The plantation is ideal for trekking and exploring after the four hour bus journey. Stay tonight in a traditional style longhouse. (BLD)

Day 5 - Kinabalu National Park
Continue to Mount Kinabalu National Park. There are many beautiful treks within the park or various lengths and terrain – perfect for looking at the unique flora in the area. In the afternoon, travel to Kota Kinabalu with an evening meal at a traditional local seafood restaurant. Overnight Daya Hotel or similar. (BLD)

Day 6 - Mulu National park
Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Mulu. In the afternoon take a guided walk through the forest to Deer Cave. Deer cave has the largest cave passage in the world and is home to millions of bats and swiftlets. Every evening, over 2 million resident bats spiral out for their evening feed. As the bats leave, the swiftlets are make their way back to the caves after a day's foraging. This bat exodus is an amazing sight to see. Overnight National Park lodge. (BLD)

Day 7 - Mulu National Park
Spend the day exploring this World Heritage Site. In the morning we visit Clear Water Cave and in the afternoon we head to the canopy walkway for great opportunities to spot birdlife and a unique view of the forest. Overnight National Park lodge. (BLD)

Day 8 - Kuching
This morning we visit a Penan settlement. The Penan tribe are a small group of nomadic forest dwellers who traditionally live as hunter gathers. Although most have now settled in small villages, there are still some who live nomadically in the forest. They are the only group of people who are permitted to hunt within the National Park. At lunchtime we fly to the city of Kuching. Overnight Harbour View Hotel or similar. (BL)

Day 9 - Traditional Bidayuh Longhouse
Drive to Serian town where you can explore the market and have lunch. After lunch continue to the Longhouse. The Bidayuh (Land Dayak) longhouse is the centre of communal life in this rural Sarawak village where all villagers live under one roof. Their main occupation is farming. Within walking distance of the longhouse are their farms with the main crops being rice, pepper and cocoa. After dinner, the Bidayuh will sound their gongs and perform their traditional warrior and maiden dance in full ceremonial regalia with the longhouse chief. You spend the night in the longhouse. Day 10 - Damai Beach Resort
After breakfast there is the option to explore the surrounding forest, trekking for two hours through pepper and rubber plantations and fruit gardens. After reaching a stunning waterfall the local guide will show you where to collect fresh water snails and prepare lunch cooked in bamboo on the fire. After the lunch at the waterfall, you will trek back to the longhouse heading to our beach resort. Overnight Damai Beach Resort or similar. (BL)

Day 11 - Damai Beach Resort
A day to relax at Damai Beach. If you are feeling active there are a couple of treks that you can do into the surrounding area, as well as dolphin watching cruises, fishing and a visit to a nearby island. Overnight Damai Beach Resort or similar (B)

Day 12 – Kuching
Transfer to Kuching for your onward flight. (B)
