A visa is required for a tourist visit, which must be obtained before departure. Applications can be made by post, and in the case of the London embassy are issued within about two days, at a cost of approximately £30.00. The most useful connection for many European travellers is Lufthansa’s thrice-weekly service from Frankfurt, with connections available from many European capitals, as well as several UK regional airports. Other less frequent options include Egypt Air via Cairo, Yemenia Yemen Airways via Sanaa, and Saudi Airlines via from Jeddah.
As with travel to most parts of Africa, we strongly recommend that you contact your Doctor’s surgery or a specialist travel clinic for up-to-date information, advice and the necessary vaccinations. We can recommend the Trailfinders Travel Clinic (www.trailfinders.com/clinic.htm) For a visit of less than one month, almost certainly you will be advised to have immunisations against the following: Diphtheria and Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Polio, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. Anti-malaria medication will also be required and the use of a DEET-containing insect repellent is highly recommended.

We constantly monitor the advice posted by the British Foreign Office and its embassy in Asmara. In particular we will always advise clients of any travel warnings. At the time of writing the only restricted areas in Eritrea are the border regions with Ethiopia and Sudan. Of course we do not cover these parts of the country, either as part of small group tours or for individual tailormade clients.
