 Eritrea’s unique and varied landscapes mean you do not have to travel far to see spring, summer and autumn all in the same afternoon! From stunning mountain ranges (the northernmost reaches of Africa’s Rift Valley) to unique red earth formations to some of the most unspoilt coral sites in the world. Archaeological evidence suggests that the plains and highlands of Eritrea were first inhabited as long as ago as 750BC, during the time of the Queen of Sheba. Visitors today can clearly see traces of the country’s fascinating history, with evidence of early Turkish rule from the beginning of the 16 th century, to more notably the arrival of the Italians in the 1880’s. The population is made up of nine ethnic groups, Tigrinya being the largest. Each has its own language. Amongst the groups, the Afars in particular, have fascinated European travellers for centuries. They inhabit the Dankalia, a long coastal strip that stretches south along the Red Sea to the border with Djibouti. The Dankalia is known as one the most remote and inhospitable places on earth, where the locals have been known to wait for up to a week for a lift |
