A fascinating insight to this little visited corner of Africa, mainly by private 4WD. We start and end with the charming capital Asmara, at 2,300m pleasant at any time of the year. You will have plenty of time to check out some of the Italian style cafes and bars before we head north to Keren, famous for its camel market. Next we travel towards the Red Sea Coast and the city of Massawa, a place with an engaging, exotic character. The buildings reflect its varied past, but most of all it has a distinct Arabian feel. We explore the nearby Dahlak Islands and snorkel at one the best coral sites in the world. Back to the mainland we will travel to Buri Peninsula, for an excellent insight into one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on the planet.

Our ‘Luxury week in Eritrea’ is the latest addition to our programme and is based at the newly opened Albergo Italia boutique hotel in Asmara, Eritrea’s capital. With its pleasant year round climate and stunning Art Deco architecture, a legacy of the country’s Italian colonial period, this is almost certainly the most charming city in Africa. Asmara represents perhaps the most concentrated and intact assemblage of Modernist architecture anywhere in the world.

Eritrea - Dankalia Adventure, 13 Days

Join us on this pioneering opportunity to explore the full length of the Dankalia. We start with a flight from Asmara to Assab, in the far south. The views of the coral reefs are awe-inspiring. You will also see the amazing lunar landscapes that make up this remote part of the country. After a night in the port city of Assab, we begin our adventure north by land all the way to Asmara. There simply is no better way to experience one of the remotest and most inhospitable places on earth. As facilities are so limited we will camp for one night, choosing a suitable beach on the Red Sea. Our second night is spent in a newly built hotel, on the edge of the Buri Peninsula. On leaving Dankalia we will reach Massawa, and from then, our Adventure tour continues on the route of our ‘Eritrea Discovery’ itinerary.
