Are your small group tours guaranteed departures? - Back to top

Unlike some operators we do not hide the fact that our trips operate on the basis of a minimum of 4 booked clients. However, as we are a small operator, dedicated to working with just a small number of destinations, we believe in running the tour whenever possible. As the destinations we feature currently receive little tourism business, we will work very hard to accommodate smaller group sizes. Our overseas colleagues count heavily on the custom. Therefore, for a supplement, starting at £150.00 per person, we can normally operate the tour on a private basis, with just two clients. We believe that for tours of this type, given the standard and the remoteness of the destination, this represents excellent value for money and is almost certainly unique amongst other operators.

Is it a safe country? - Back to top

We have a duty to monitor the advice issued by the British Foreign Office (www.fco.gov.uk) and will always be willing to arrange an alternative destination and/or date, should a warning ever be issued to avoid areas of the country which we feature in our programmes. At the present time, East Timor is a peaceful and stable country, and nothing suggests that your trip will be anything other than an enjoyable and rewarding experience. In our view, we believe the world’s newest nation is the most friendly on the planet and every visitor can be assured of a genuine and warm welcomes.

As with any holiday, we of course strongly recommend taking out travel insurance at the time of booking, which may offer some protection against any possible Government travel warning. Nonetheless, in the event of such a warning, we will offer a prompt and full refund, if we are unable to offer a satisfactory alternative.

Can credit cards be used in East Timor? - Back to top

Our advice is not to rely on the use of credit cards, although some of the larger hotels, and more expensive restaurants, do accept visa and mastercard. These cards may also be used to withdraw US dollars, currently used as the local currency, from ATM machines. Presently, the country has a grand total of three ATM’s, all in Dili. See www.visa.com/atm for further details

Why don't you sell international flights? - Back to top

We know from past experience working in the flight market, how competitive the business is. Most airlines are no longer giving smaller travel agents and tour operators their best deals. Increasingly the best fares are to be found on the airlines own websites.

There are some exceptions. Some operators will offer ‘group flights’ at competitive rates, usually based on a minimum of ten clients travelling together on each leg of the trip. Many will feel that this is somewhat restrictive, as not all clients may want to travel from London for example. Some may not want to return the same date, or by the same route.

Therefore, we recommend that you contact a specialist such as Trailfinders (www.trailfinders.com), who will always offer the widest range of options, at the most competitive fares. They can also look at interesting multi-stop or round-the-world fares, as part of a wider itinerary. Of course, we can hold an option on one of our tours, to give you an opportunity to ‘shop around’ for the best deal.

Please feel free to give us a call for further information and suggestions about routes.

Can I book pre or post tour accommodation? - Back to top

Yes, give us a call for rates. Dili has a good range of accommodation. If you are travelling on our small group tour, we recommend using the Hotel Timor, as it is the joining point of our tour.

What is the standard of accommodation going to be like? - Back to top

We can honestly say that great effort has gone into finding the best accommodation available East Timor has to offer. Although tourism is in its infancy and facilities cannot always be compared to other countries in the region, our choice of hotels will generally offer with running hot water, satellite TV, and a fridge. Most will have bar and restaurant.

We would welcome suggestions for any other ‘undiscovered destinations’ you think may be of interest to fellow travellers. Can you recommend a guidebook?

We highly recommend the 1 st edition Lonely Planet guide to East Timor (www.lonelyplanet.com). Interestingly, Tony Wheeler, the founder of Lonely Planet, wrote the guide. A quick glance through the book will soon reveal some of the ‘magic moments’ he discovered on his travels around the worlds newest nation.
