Due largely to the devastating civil war that racked Angola for nearly 30 years, tourism has barely touched this remote and spectacular country which offers a truly unique and unforgettable travel experience. Largely unaffected by the war, Lubango provides access to the coastal town of Namibe and its excellent beaches. En route, watch for the Tunda-Vala volcanic fissure 20km (12mi) from Lubango, where you can climb to 2600m (8528ft) above sea level. The view of a sheer drop to sea level is spectacular. The south of Angola is a wonderful place to meet the local tribes people, including the Himba and the Mucuval. Features such as Parque National de Iona, Serra de Lebba, Foz du Cunene, and Baia dos Tigres are unsurpassed in their natural beauty and provide unrivalled opportunities for nature lovers, photographers, bird watchers and overland enthusiasts. Angola is extremely bird-rich (over 900 species) and has a range of biomes and ecosystems that are almost unequalled in Africa.
